One soldier was killed and four were wounded in an ambush by suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the Aegean province of İzmir this morning, daily Hürriyet reported.
Suspected militants fired on soldiers after a landmine planted on the road leading toward the Turkish Amphibious Forces Command in İzmir’s Foça district was detonated via remote control while a military vehicle passed by.
Turkish soldiers fired back and one solider was killed in the clash, according to initial reports. Four wounded soldiers were taken to Foça State Hospital.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
