Urgent situatuions of violence like the political and military "trap" the world is facing in Syria, may demand quick responses, but violent responses are by nature inadequate to eliminate the causes of the evil - they may become unavoidable only in strictly defencive situations. Before reality reaches the crucial point of mutual deafness, let us all, politicians, journalists and common people, set aside any bad councel provided by power greediness or communicational aiming.
USA being a superpower, they would not risk at all their reliability if wrong decisions were to be taken back. And decisions whose outcome is either uncertain or may became a boomerang later, are not the right decisions.
Reliable are the just people as well as countries that steadily honor justice, not the threat promise keepers. Unjust cause or ambiguous cause supporters will find it difficult one day, to explain how military strikes resulting undoubtedly in more massacres in Syria could ever be justified by "humanitarian reasons".
Ridiculous will appear then the continuation of the civil war in Syria, not the superpower which didn't know when and why it should have stepped back from decisions taken on a volontarist basis by violation of international low.
Self-restraint, when this is recommended by the nature of the things, prooves the wisdom of those powerful who rule in peace. On the contrary, implementing peace with the use of weapons and against the just will of others, shows the deepest weakness (economical and ethical) of the one who is in a hurry to use force.
Human things being uncertain, many find refuge in immediate power increase, underestimating the inconvenience of the repercussions some of their decisons will suscitate - even to friends. Examine well and you will find that bad councelors are those whose councelling would equally fit any mafia leader: get more powerful!
Nevertheless, good councelors are those who do not hesitate to become unpleasent to the interests which support the leader, if the outcome of the decision making is to be turned around by reality in the long run. And good leader is the one who knows how to control and handle the tendencies of blind self-interest. This can be done only by means of deeper understanidng of the true nature of the things, which is beyond power and interest based analysis, covering the best interests of all mankind: You cannot really do anything good by doing something really bad._ What is good and what is bad? As a cristian father simply and wisely put it, our common Father is God and in this world we are all a small community.
One should never forget, public office shows the quality of the man in power, but it's his peaceful ordinary life among ordinary people after the end of his public office, that will be the only real proof that he did well.
