Abstract

Having achieved independence on the 24th of August 1991, Ukraine as a newly-born state started to face many crucial questions. The most important being the question about her security. Like the proverbial Knight from Ukrainian folklore, it was standing on the crossroads with three signs pointing to 3 directions, neither of them promising an easy path.  The first one was a Euro-Atlantic direction. The second one was integration into different security structures, for instance, the Treaty on Collective Security, alias the Tashkent Treaty. The third one was a non-block status, i.e. finding a specific Ukrainian key to the security issues, tailor-cut and tightly fitting the truly unique situation in and around this key Central-East European nation. As to Ukraine’s future between security systems in Europe, Kyiv will need to find the middle ground in the military, domestic and foreign policy, optimal from the viewpoint of maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
