Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (DFR.KRG.org) – Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations Minister Falah Mustafa welcomed Greek Ambassador to Iraq Dionyssios Kyvetos upon his first visit to the Kurdistan Region.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr Nikolaos Doukas, Head of the Greek Embassy’s Regional Office in Kurdistan. During the meeting, Ambassador Kyvetos discussed the prospect of upgrading Greece’s diplomatic presence in Erbil. He noted that further economic and political activity in the Kurdistan Region has been a priority for Greece since 2009, but due to unforeseen economic challenges, such initiatives have been delayed.
The Ambassador also discussed political developments in Iraq, expressing confidence in the newly established government. He hoped that outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad would be resolved soon, underscoring the importance of cooperation in order to overcome the current impasse and succeed in the fight against ISIS. He added that ISIS is an international threat and said that more attention should be paid to refugees and IDPs.
Minister Mustafa welcomed Ambassador Kyvetos, expressing his government’s appreciation for the longstanding historical friendship between Kurdistan and Greece. He strongly supported the idea of upgrading Greece’s diplomatic presence in the Kurdistan Region, explaining that such a step would help facilitate relations between the two sides. He also pointed out the potential for Greek firms to participate in the economic growth of the Kurdistan Region in a number of fields.
The Minister said that key unresolved issues with the federal government, including Article 140, hydrocarbons legislation, budgetary matters, and the status of the Peshmerga forces; all must be addressed based on the Constitution. Despite this, the Kurdistan Region chose to participate in the coalition government in Baghdad in the hope to encourage true reform and progress in Erbil – Baghdad relations. Minister Mustafa stated that it is time for Baghdad to be more realistic and proactive in resolving ongoing issues, and the new government has all the tools to do so.
