Το MTV επέλεξε τον κωμικό Russell Brand στο ρόλο του οικοδεσπότη της τελετής απονομής των MTV Movie Awards 2012, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στο αμφιθέατρο Gibson στην Καλιφόρνια, την Κυριακή, 3 Ιουνίου, και θα μεταδοθεί ζωντανά από το μουσικό κανάλι Ο υπεύθυνος παραγωγής Jesse Ignjatovic, που είχε συνεργαστεί με τον Brand στα Video Musiv Awards 2008 και 2009, δήλωσε ότι ο 36χρονος ηθοποιός είναι «λαμπρός καλλιτέχνης, γιατί συνδυάζει το χιούμορ και τη ροκ αισθητική».
Στο διαγωνιστικό μέρος, οι ταινίες που συγκεντρώνουν τις περισσότερες υποψηφιότητες στα 21α MTV βραβεία είναι το «The Hunger Games» και το «Bridesmaids», ενώ αρκετές υποψηφιότητες συγκεντρώνουν και οι ταινίες «Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2», «The Help» και «The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1».
Όπως ανακοινώθηκε στο mtv.com, στα φετινά MTV Movie Awards προστέθηκαν πέντε νέες κατηγορίες: Best Music, Best On-Screen Transformation, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance, Best Cast και Best On-Screen Dirtbag.
