Οι Tiger Lillies ιδρύθηκαν από τον Martyn Jaques που πέρασε την «ενηλικίωσή» του σε ένα διαμέρισμα πάνω από έναν οίκο ανοχής στο Soho του Λονδίνου «παίρνοντας μάτι» απ το παράθυρό του την ένταση του υποκόσμου της περιοχής . Πέρασαν 10 χρόνια μέχρι να μεταφέρει αυτόν τον παράξενο κόσμο σε τέχνη καθώς γινόταν τραγουδιστής και τραγουδοποιός . το 1989 πήρε το πρώτο του ακορντεόν και λίγο μετά οι Tiger Lillies ήταν πραγματικότητα.
THE TIGER LILLIES were founded by Martyn Jaques who spent most of his twenties in a flat above a brothel in London‘s Soho, peeping through his window at the buzz of Soho’s lowlife. It took Jaques a good ten years to turn that strange world into art, while training as a singer and songwriter. In 1989 he got his first accordion and THE TIGER LILLIES were formed shortly after.
Ο κόσμος των Tiger Lillies είναι σκοτεινός , ιδιόμορφος και ποικίλος με στιγμές βαθιάς θλίψης , μαύρου χιούμορ και απέραντης ομορφιάς. Αυτή η μοναδική «αναρχικά μπρεχτικη όπερα του δρόμου» γυρίζει τον κόσμο παίζοντας τραγούδια που δεν αφορούν “ξανθά κορίτσια και αγόρια που τρέχουν στο λιβάδι» , παραθετοντας τον ιδρυτή τους Martyn Jaques . Ως εκ τούτου , τα τραγούδια τους καλύπτουν τις σκοτεινές πλευρές της ζωής , απ την πορνεία και τις εξαρτήσεις μέχρι την βία και την απελπισία .Με μια δόση «διαταραγμένου» χιούμορ και καυστικής ειρωνείας, οι Tiger Lillies σηκώνουν το μεσαίο δάχτυλο, και μας καλούν να διερωτηθούμε « τι κάνουμε γελώντας με αυτά? »
Η μουσική τους είναι ένα μίγμα της προπολεμικής Βερολινέζικης καμπαρέ μουσικής σκηνής ,της αναρχικής όπερας και της τσιγγάνικης μουσικής με τις σκέψεις των Μπρεχτ και Ζακ Μπρελ να έρχονται στην ζωή . οι Tiger Lillies σοκάρουν , ψυχαγωγούν και διασκεδάζουν με έναν μεταμοντέρνο βαριετέ τρόπο , προσφέροντας ένα αμίμητο σόου που δεν έχει όρια .
