By Selcan Hacaoglu  Apr 9, 2014

Turkey’s government is trying to give its spies broader powers as it cracks down on “traitors” Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames for a corruption probe.

Parliament is set to open discussions on a related bill today, state-run Anatolia news agency said. The proposed legislation further empowers the National Intelligence Agency to monitor telecommunication channels and establish contacts with any group, including Kurdish militants, in the name of state security. It would also shield agents from being sued on matters related to their jobs.

The parliamentary debate begins as prosecutors question eight police officers detained on suspicion they illegally eavesdropped on the government. Erdogan, buoyed by a strong show of support in local elections, vowed yesterday to eliminate “traitors” he says are driving a probe of government corruption at the behest of his U.S.-based rival, preacher Fethullah Gulen. Gulen denies involvement in the investigation.

The nation’s financial markets have plunged since news of corruption investigations emerged in December, though they rallied after the balloting. The lira slid today after three days of gains and was trading at 2.1013 per dollar at 11:44 a.m. in Istanbul.
