Talabani heads to Germany for treatment
BAGHDAD,— Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has left a Baghdad hospital and is being transferred to Germany for treatment after suffering a stroke earlier this week, his office said on Thursday.
"Treatment has allowed suitable conditions for his Excellency to be transferred outside the country," the statement said, adding that his health had improved.
The semi-official Al-Iraqiya TV channel said :"the president was taken to Germany, accompanied by the German medical team who arrived yesterday morning, to be hospitalized in a private hospital after suffering a stroke."
The professor in neurological surgery, Dr. Najimalddin Karim said Wednesday "After we reassured on the health of President Jalal Talabani, he is scheduled to be moved on Thursday to Germany."
A statement of the PUK had quoted Dr. Karim on Wednesday as saying "after the German medical team has arrived and conducted the necessary tests to President Talabani, and after checking that the president's health is stable, the German team decided, in coordination with the Iraqi medical team to transfer the President Talabani to a private hospital in Germany."
He stressed that "the German medical team has confirmed that Talabani's health is now stable and he can travel out of the country."
President Jalal Talabani suffered a stroke and was taken to the hospital.
The 79-year-old Kurdish statesman, who helped ease tensions among Shi'ites, Sunnis,www.ekurd.net and Kurds and in the growing dispute over oil between Baghdad and the country's autonomous Kurdistan, was admitted to hospital on Monday night.
